Holder Gets Lots of Responses to his Surveys
July 14, 2010
Ed Holder puts a lot of value in the regular community mail-in surveys he conducts on an ongoing basis.
"Occasionally, someone will return one of my surveys with a comment asking if I really read them," he said. "I can assure you that I read every single response that is sent in. While this is time consuming, I feel it is the only real way of knowing what you are thinking and concerned about. I also try to respond to as many comments as I can although I found this extremely challenging to do on a regular basis due to the volume-but please know I always read them."
Ed says his fellow MPs are astounded by the many thousands of replies he gets and the time he commits to reading and replying to them.

Infrastructure Projects Appear to be Reducing Unemployment
June 23, 2010
London West MP Ed Holder is encouraged by some early results in job creation in the London area, with a measure of credit due to infrastructure projects funded by the three levels of government.
"The unemployment rate in May 2010 for the London area-which includes St. Thomas and Strathroy-stood at 8.8%, compared to 11.5% in July and August 2009," he said. "If you look at the history of employment in the area over the past 20 years we see the average unemployment rate in London since 1987 has been 7.01%. The lowest was 3.4% in October and November 1989."
Ed said great progress has been made in $100 million worth of infrastructure projects in London announced in the past year. All projects under the program are to be completed by next March.
London West Residents Oppose OAS residency reduction
June 16, 2010
London West residents, in response to a survey conducted by MP Ed Holder, overwhelmingly oppose a reduction in the Canadian residency requirement to qualify for Old Age Security (OAS) payments.
Ed asked constituents how they felt about a proposal by Liberal MPs Ruby Dhalla and Bob Rae that the residency requirement for OAS be reduced from the current 10 years to just three years.
"While I intend to vote against this change because I feel it would be unfair to those who had paid taxes for much longer, I sought the opinion of people in London West," said Ed. "So far, thousands of households have responded and the results are overwhelming. More than 99% of London West residents oppose this proposed change."
Ed said having London West residents return their surveys and letting him know how they feel about important issues ensures he can more properly represent the views of his constituents.

Feeling a little better off financially? Your wallet may be joining in celebration of June 5th as Tax Freedom Day in Canada. That's the day the average Canadian's income completed payment of taxes to all levels of government and we started working for ourselves.

"Since taking office in 2006, our Conservative Government has cut the GST, provided income tax relief to all Canadians, enhanced the Child Tax Credit for families, and increased the Age Credit to allow seniors to save on their tax bill," says Ed. "These measures and others have helped push back Tax Freedom Day."

"After seeing the budget, researching its contents and thinking it through, the Liberal Party did not put forward any amendments."
Holder said it seems this was the first time in Parliamentary history that the Opposition has not put forward one idea for improving the Government's agenda.

Holder Submits Views On Local Television
November 19, 2009
London West MP Ed Holder has submitted to the CRTC hearing the views of Londoners on local television programming.
The CRTC is conducting a review of the issues which have been simmering for the past several months. The television networks are seeking payment by the cable companies for the local signals they pick up and distribute to their customers. The networks say these revenues would support the operation of local TV stations, some of whom are closing, including CKNX A Channel in Wingham, and others, including A Channel London station (former CFPL) are facing revenue losses.
The cable companies have indicated that any such new expenditures should be considered a "tax" and would be passed on to their subscribers with the general estimate that this could amount to a new fee of up to $10 a month.
Both parties have been advertising their opposing views.
Holder said the overwhelming view of London West residents is a desire to see local news, generated locally, edited locally, and shown locally. " I have been told many times, in no uncertain terms, that Toronto news is not local news," says Holder. "While subscribers do not want to pay additional fees for cable and satellite services, most tell me they want to see current revenue collected in the name of local programming directed to local programming."
Holder says the over whelming majority of London West constituents want local programming to continue in markets as large as London, but they have strong reservations about paying more for this.

Ed Holder Seeking Voters Views
September 3, 2009
London West MP Ed Holder is asking for comments and opinions of London West residents and will publish results on his website.
Starting this week he will post an online survey on his website, www.edholder.ca and record the results a week later. His first question deals with the possibility of another federal election, perhaps this fall.
"Our last federal election was October 14th, 2008, " Ed reminds us. "The leader ot he Liberal Party has said he will no longer "prop up" the Conservative Government. An election will cost Canadian taxpayers $350 million. I suspect a lot of Canadians would think spending this much money on an election during these troubled economic times would be a questionable decision."
Ed's first question, now posted on his website, is: Do you believe a federeal election at this time would jeopardize Canada's economic recovery?"
Please visit www.edholder.ca to register your vote and see the ongoing results.
New Cable TV Fees Not Set by Government
September 3, 2009
If you have received a letter from your TV cable provider announcing a new tax or fee on your bill, it is important for you to know this is not a government mandated fee.
The decision to pass on a new fee is being made by your cable provider.
The Canadian Radio and Television Commission (CRTC) recently established a Local Programming Improvement Fund to conserve and improve local television programming. The decision to establish the fund was made after local television stations, including London's, petitioned for recognition that the cable companies were broadcasting local programming with no compensation for the local TV station.
The CRTC said, in response to the decision by the cable companies to pass on the costs to subscribers, "Given their reported profits, the CRTC is of the view that there is no justification to pss the cost on to consumers. If your cable/satellite company has decided to increase the fees for your service, it is a business decision that is not regulated or mandated by the CRTC".

Londoners Receive Over $1 Billion
July 15, 2006
Since becoming a Member of Parliament, I have worked hard to ensure that London gets it share of federal funding and government business.
The City of London had received strong government support since I was elected to Parliament just nine short months ago. When we took a moment to add it all up, the numbers are significant and the impact will be felt by all Londoners.
I have personal announced over a quarter-of-a-Billon dollars in government funding for the City of London and London community organizations. I have also personally annnounced government business of about three-quarters-of-a-Billion dollars.
Having more than $1 billion of government money announced for London in just nine months is quite humbling for a rookie MP like me. When I went to Ottawa, I was deteremined to make sure we got our fair share and I honestly believe we have done better than that.

He asked the Minister of Foreign Affairs the Hon. Lawrence Cannon, for any news from his meetings with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton who was visiting Canada.
Minister Cannon responded: "Our government is very concerned about rising and particularly negative impacts of Buy America legislation. London West Holds Its Annual General Meeting
April 15, 2009
The London West Electoral District of the Conservative Party of Canada held its annual General Meeting at the Berkshire Club this evening. The meeting was well attended by more than 60 enthusiastic Conservatives who enjoyed speeches by London West MP Ed Holder and National Party Councilor Mark Dotzert.
Ed took the time to thank those who had served the Party in London West over the past year including his Election Team, Board members, and other Party activists. He shared some of his experiences as London West's representative in Ottawa over the past six months. And he outlined the plan to rewin London West when the next election is called.
Riding President Ron Fisher presented the Board's Annual Report for 2008. His remarks are below:
2008 was much like each year since the merger of the founding Parties and the creation of the Conservative Party of Canada - election readiness, election campaign. But in 2008 WE WON!
The victory came about because of the cooperation of the Board, long time Party members, new members and volunteers, the Candidate, and the Campagin Team led by Michael Meagher.
London West was very much a target riding for the Party and our efforts at the local level were helped greatly throughout the year by visits from Cabinet Ministers both prior to and during the election. The highlight, of course, was the appearance by the Prime Minister at our campaign headquarters on October 11. In addition, we had support from Ministers Nicholson, Toews, Baird, Oda, Flaherty, Day and Prentice as well as Senator DiNino and Oxford MP Dave Mackenzie.
The Association conducted both an Annual General Meeting and a Delegate Selection Meeting in 2008. We sent several delgates to the Party's Policy Convention in Winnipeg, a very successful convention. The Campaign Team held its debrief two weeks after the election and for the balance of 2008 began its planning for the next election. The Team continues to meet in 2009.
The Party survived the Parliamentary Crisis and locally we had great support in members writing letters, signing petitions, and attending the Rally for Democracy in and effort to thwart the coalition of opposition parties.
For the second year we held a Christmas Social in conjunction with neighbouring ridings. This year the event was so successful that we had to turn people away.
Two major projects got underway in 2008 and have been completed in 2009. First was the completion of an EDA Handbook. Thanks to Directors Meinen, Queale, Johnson, Kennedy and Bullas for their work on this. Second was the creation of our riding website. Thanks to Michael Meagher and Ed's Campaign Communications Manager Jim Etherington.
I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of Board member Mary Lou Ambrogio who came forward as our Party's candidate in London-Fanshawe amd came in second, well ahead of the Liberal candidate.
Thanks to all the Directors for their support during the year. The first duty of an EDA is to elect an MP. Mission accomplished. The year was a success!

Ed Holder Announces Double Federal Money For The City Of London
April 3, 2009
O T T A W A - Member of Parliament Ed Holder is pleased to announce that the City of London will directly and immediately benefit from a decision by the federal Conservative government to expedite and double “gas tax” funding transfers to the City of London. The City of London received $10,935,207 last fiscal year and will receive $21,870,415 this fiscal year.
Today, the federal Gas Tax Transfer doubled to $2 billion annually. The Gas Tax Fund (GTF) will remain at that level beyond 2014, when the Government makes it a permanent measure, providing municipalities with stable and predictable funding for their long-term infrastructure priorities. Accelerating the first payment of the Gas Tax Fund by almost three months, the federal government is making up to $1 billion available to municipalities almost three months early.
“The funding was due to come in three months, but our government knows the need is immediate and that is why we are giving twice the money to the City and getting it to them early. For stimulus spending to have the greatest impact, the money needs to be spent as soon as possible. By transferring substantial funds to the City this week, we will help save jobs in London,” said Ed Holder.

Ed Holder Hosts Prime Minister Harper During A London Rally
March 13, 2009
Ed Holder hosted Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Canada's Minister of Human Resources Diane Finley during a reception at the London Club for local Conservative supporters. More than 110 Londoners had the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and Minister Finley.
During his trip to London the Prime Minister delivered the following speech that defines the importance of skills training to Canada's economic future:
Preparing Canadians for the Jobs of Tomorrow
By Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada
Prime Minister Harper of Canada articulates his Government is ensuring Canadians are prepared to take advantage of the new economic opportunities by investing heavily in skills and training.
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. Greetings to everybody here from Fanshawe College. Greetings also to my colleagues, Member of Parliament for London West, Ed Holder, from Elgin-Middlesex-London Member of Parliament Joe Preston and Member of Parliament Bev Shipley from Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. Welcome to the Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, the honourable Diane Finley. I want to thank Ed, Joe, Bev, and Diane for joining me here today and also, for the work all of you are doing on behalf of the people of the city and the people of the greater south-western Ontario region. Also, greetings to your worship, Madame Mayor - we appreciate having you here today as well. Again, thank you to the College for hosting us. As you know, our Government's Economic Action Plan contains funds for the revitalization of infrastructure at both universities and colleges because we recognize the outstanding work institutions such as this college does for the young people of the country.
Ladies and gentlemen, forty-five days ago, our Government brought forward one of the most important budgets in our history, Canada's Economic Action Plan. It is a plan that cuts red tape and ensures that targeted stimulus spending hits our economy quickly. Our Economic Action Plan is designed to address both Canada's short-term needs as well as our long-term goals. It supports workers and taxpayer to stimulate spending; it helps support the housing sector by helping first-time homebuyers and home owners with renovations; it puts Canadians to work, building bridges, roads, and other essential infrastructure; it supports businesses and particularly hard-hit communities; and it has important measures to ensure access to finance and credit for Canadian business.
It is a plan that focuses on Canada's strength and we should remember these strengths: we have the best fiscal position in the G7; the soundest banking system in the world; low inflation and interest rates; and a diversified economy with abundant natural resources. Indeed, Canada, according to the most recent IMF report released this week, is “in prime form” and “better placed than many” to weather the effects of the global recession.
But of all of our strengths, the greatest by far and the greatest as we look to the future is our people. Canadians are hard working and highly motivated; Canadians want to succeed. And despite the challenges we face in a time of global economic recession, our Government is determined that they will succeed. That's why today, I’m pleased to highlight budget initiatives that will help Canadians get the skills they need to excel in the workforce of the future.
Under our Economic Action Plan, our Government is introducing two new job training initiatives and expanding two existing initiatives. It is estimated that these measures could directly benefit over 200,000 Canadians. Whether recently unemployed, looking to join the workforce, or simply underemployed, these Canadians have an important role to play in the future of our country.
Minister Finley will share further details on these programmes with you in a moment, but I want to make it clear once again that today's announcement is not simply about job training. It is about more fundamentally where we are headed as a country. As the world struggles with the effects of global recession, we as Canadians are looking ahead. Despite the rising unemployment, we see today, the demographic reality is this: as soon as this global recession ends, our country will face a long run challenge of labour shortage. Our Economic Action Plan is making the investments necessary today, in order to ensure we have the workers that will be needed tomorrow.
While the challenges Canada faces right now may be great, greater is our resolve to move ahead. By looking forward today, and investing in skills training, we are seizing the opportunities that will get us through these tough times, and ensure that our country emerges stronger than ever. Thank you.
Ed Holder Hosts Justice Minister Nicholson
March 7, 2009

Ed Holder Joins In Support For A-Channel
March 7, 2009
Fears that London may lose its TV station due to spending cutbacks by its owner CTV have prompted action by Ed Holder, MP for London West, to join with other local MPs to seek community support to save the station from eventual closing.
Holder will appeal to Industry Minister Tony Clement to make him aware of the loss to the London community if its only commercial television outlet should be closed in the future. He joins with London-North-Centre MP Glen Pearson and London-Fanshawe MP Irene Mathyssen in asking the London community to rally by emailing his constituency office to express support for the station or writing to Ed in Ottawa.
Ed’s constituency office may be reached by email at his website or residents may write to Ed postage free at Ed Holder, MP, House of Commons, Ottawa ON K1A 0A6.
CTV has not announced any plans to close the station but it has given layoff and termination notices to 48 staff in the London area and cancelled the morning show on London’s A station (formerly known by several names including its original name of CFPL Television).
Employees have initiated a Facebook group, Save A Channel in London.
The MPs, including Holder, are not seeking a bailout for local TV stations threatened with closing but rather are asking that consideration be given to federal investment in local news programming as a way of supporting local efforts, here and in other Canadian communities.
“My best sense of this issue is that it’s about revenues and how stations and various media outlets are able to draw their revenues,” said Holder in a London Free Press article.
“We’re taking it at different angles,” he said, referring to the efforts by his and his fellow MPs. “That’s a pretty good way to do it. We’re all trying to find the same resolve.”

Ed Holder Named To Parliamentary Committees
March 6, 2009
Our London West Member of Parliament Ed Holder has been named to two House of Commons committees and a Conservative caucus committee, all of interest to citizens in our riding, and for Ontario and Canada.
Most significantly he has been named a member of the House of Commons Standing
Committee on International Trade . This is a critical committee given the potential for trade issues arising from comments about buy American voiced by U.S. politicians during discussions of government stimulus funding for American companies. Ed’s business background gives him a full appreciation of the importance to free trade for London employers.
In addition, he has been named a member of the Conservative Caucus on automobile matters, a hot item during these uncertain times as the auto companies are fighting for survival. Given the number of local auto assembly companies and firms that supply the auto industry, Ed’s involvement will be of value.
Ed has also been named to the House of Commons Standing Committee on the Library of Parliament. His involvement will be a great importance for those from London seeking to do research in the Parliamentary Library. His office will be able to arrange access for visitors from London.
He has also been appointed as Vice-Chair of the Canada-Portuguese Parliamentary Friendship Group.
Ed Holder Skate For Kids A Huge Success!
February 16, 2009
Ed Holder and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of London and Area celebrated the February 16 Family Day holiday with more than 600 London kids of all ages at Ed’s Skate For Kids celebration at the John Labatt Centre. Ed was joined at the event by London Knights legends and NHL Alumni Dennis Maruk and Dave Hutchison.
This was the second year that Ed hosted a Family Day skate at the JLC. Each has been focused on providing London families with a fun outing on this newest of Ontario holidays. The family skates have always been free. This year’s attendees were simply asked to make a non-perishable food donation at the door to the London Food Bank, an essential family service during these tough economic times. More than 1/4 ton of food was collected and given to the London Food Bank - just because Londoners care!
The tie in with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of London and Area made this year’s Skate For Kids particularly special. On February 1 of this year Big Brothers and Big Sisters in our region followed the success of other Big Brothers Big Sisters locations across Canada and became a unified organization.
Sheila O’Neill, the Resource Development Manager for the new organization said, “Unification is an excellent opportunity for both Big Brothers and Big Sisters to take what we do best and make it even better for the benefit of children and families in our community. We are thrilled to have our first unified event at the Ed Holder Skate For Kids. This was a fun way to begin our new journey together!”
